Dr. Aobakwe Segwe Bio

Co-Founder, Centre of Medical Imaging (CMI)

Dr. Aobakwe Segwe is a radiologist, entrepreneur and one of South Africa’s emerging voices on the future of diagnostic medicine.

She believes every scan impacts lives – behind every image is a person whose life may be changed by the answers it holds. That belief drives what she calls “healthcare democracy”: the conviction that quality diagnostic care shouldn’t depend on which side of a highway you happen to be on. A stroke on the N1 corridor and a stroke in a rural part of the Eastern Cape can have vastly different outcomes today – and closing that gap is what Dr. Segwe has built her career around.

Her purpose is to give diagnostic healthcare a voice so that more people, regardless of where they live, receive the right care when they need it, delivered with the compassion every patient deserves. For Dr. Segwe, that means redefining radiology as a visible, responsive partner in patient care, not a service working quietly behind a screen. She’s determined to retire the old image of the radiologist in a dark room, replacing it with a model where radiologists work alongside referring doctors as active members of the clinical team – helping them diagnose earlier and treat sooner, while making sure patients never feel alone during a time of uncertainty.

Her fascination with how things work began long before she entered medicine. Growing up in Mahikeng, she spent hours exploring the natural world and even dissecting insects out of curiosity – an early glimpse of the inquisitive mind that would eventually lead her into medicine. That curiosity took her to the University of Pretoria, where she studied medicine, before completing her Master’s degree in Medicine (MMed) at the University of the Witwatersrand and earning her Fellowship of the College of Medicine South Africa (FCRad CMSA).

"Becoming a radiologist was never the ultimate aim. For Dr. Segwe, it became the platform through which she could make a lasting difference."
