Meet Dr. Aobakwe Segwe: Changing the Face of Diagnostic Healthcare in Africa

Diagnostic healthcare has the power to change lives.

Behind every scan is a patient waiting for answers. Behind every image is a healthcare professional looking for the information they need to make the right decision. And behind every advancement in diagnostic medicine is an opportunity to identify disease earlier, improve treatment and ultimately create better outcomes for patients.

For Dr. Aobakwe Segwe, that opportunity comes with a responsibility.

A radiologist, entrepreneur and healthcare leader, Dr. Segwe has built her career around a bold ambition: to help shape a better future for diagnostic healthcare across Africa.

At the heart of her work is a simple belief:

Where a person lives should never determine the quality of diagnostic care they receive.

It is a belief that has taken her work far beyond the radiology room and into healthcare leadership, professional development, research, advocacy and policy.

Never Settling for “Good Enough”

Healthcare continues to evolve at an extraordinary pace. New imaging technologies are improving what clinicians can see. Research is changing what medicine understands. Artificial intelligence and digital healthcare are creating entirely new possibilities.

But progress cannot simply be measured by having access to better technology.

For Dr. Segwe, meaningful progress means ensuring that these advances ultimately improve the lives of the people healthcare exists to serve.

It means continually asking difficult questions.

Can diagnoses happen sooner? Can specialist healthcare reach more communities? Are healthcare professionals being given the opportunities they need to develop? Is African research adequately represented in global medicine? And are the people working within diagnostic healthcare represented when important healthcare decisions are being made?

These questions continue to shape her work.

Advancing Diagnostic Care

Through advanced diagnostic imaging and the development of healthcare professionals, Dr. Segwe is committed to raising the standard of diagnostic medicine and helping prepare the next generation of specialists.

Technology may enable better diagnostics, but skilled professionals remain at the heart of delivering meaningful healthcare.

Championing Better Access

Access to sophisticated diagnostic healthcare remains uneven across many communities.

Dr. Segwe advocates for a future where geography is no longer one of the greatest determinants of the quality of diagnostic care a patient can access.

Because earlier and more accurate diagnosis should not be a privilege reserved for those who happen to live near the right hospital, specialist or technology.

Giving Diagnostics a Seat at the Table

Diagnostic medicine plays a fundamental role throughout the patient journey, yet the voices of those working within the field are not always represented where healthcare policy and strategic decisions are shaped.

Dr. Segwe believes diagnostic healthcare must have a meaningful voice in those conversations.

Improving healthcare requires collaboration between clinicians, researchers, policymakers, healthcare organisations and communities — with diagnostics playing an important part in that discussion.

Putting African Evidence Into Global Medicine

Africa should not simply consume the world’s medical research. It should help create it.

Dr. Segwe is passionate about increasing African-led research and evidence so that medical understanding reflects the populations healthcare professionals are actually treating.

Building a stronger body of African clinical evidence has the potential to improve both healthcare on the continent and medicine globally.

“We have a responsibility to challenge convention continually and improve the future of diagnostic healthcare.”

Leadership That Challenges What Is Possible

As co-founder of the Centre of Medical Imaging (CMI), Dr. Segwe has helped develop a multidisciplinary diagnostic imaging practice designed around collaboration, advanced technology and comprehensive patient care.

Her work has also taken her onto national and international platforms as a conference speaker and healthcare leader, including serving as Chair of the Africa Health Congress 2025.

However, titles and recognition are not what ultimately drive her work.

What matters is progress.

Dr. Segwe refuses to accept that today’s standard of diagnostic healthcare represents the limit of what is possible. Instead, she continues to question established approaches, explore new technologies, contribute to research and collaborate with healthcare professionals who share the goal of creating better outcomes.

And through the technology, research and innovation, one principle remains constant:

“Behind every scan is a person whose life may be changed by the answers it holds.”

That perspective keeps the patient at the centre of every conversation about the future of diagnostic medicine.

Recognition Along the Way

Dr. Segwe’s contribution to healthcare, leadership and entrepreneurship has also received recognition across South Africa.

Her achievements include being named a finalist for Top Women Owned Business SMME 2025, sponsored by Standard Bank; a finalist for Top Women Business in Health & Pharmaceutical 2025, sponsored by Drs Mashao & Dzichauya Inc.; and a finalist for Top Women Leader in Professional & Support Services 2025.

The Centre of Medical Imaging was also recognised as a Top Gender Empowered Company in 2026.

While these achievements mark important moments along the journey, they also represent something larger: the growing role African women, medical specialists and entrepreneurs are playing in shaping the future of healthcare.

Showing Young People What Is Possible

Changing healthcare is not only about improving what exists today.

It is also about inspiring the people who will build what comes next.

Through Impact for Good, a non-profit initiative, Dr. Segwe and her team visit schools to introduce young people to the possibilities that exist within medicine, science and healthcare.

The objective goes beyond traditional career guidance.

It is about helping young people imagine a future they may never previously have considered possible.

Dr. Segwe wants young South Africans from every background to know that becoming a doctor, radiologist, scientist, specialist, researcher, entrepreneur or healthcare leader is not something reserved for somebody else.

It can be their future too.

Sometimes the first step towards changing an industry is simply showing the next generation that they belong in it.

“We never stop learning, questioning and exploring better ways to improve lives.”

A Platform for Ideas, Progress and Better Healthcare

This website will provide a platform for Dr. Segwe to share more of the ideas, developments and conversations shaping diagnostic healthcare today.

From radiology and emerging technology to healthcare leadership, African medical research, access to diagnostics, policy, professional development and the future of medicine, the goal is to explore not only where healthcare currently stands, but where it could go next.

Because meaningful progress begins by refusing to assume that the way something has always been done is the way it must always be done.

And when it comes to diagnostic healthcare in Africa, there is still enormous potential ahead.

Welcome to the conversation.
